Durocher General Store

159 Montreal Road. Artist: Karole Marois (2000)

In the early 1880s, Janeville only had three grocery stores, including the Durocher store.

This building has two murals on the western facade. The first mural illustrates the exterior of the store in the 1890s, while the other depicts the interior around 1915.

The Durocher Family
The Durocher family is one of Vanier’s pioneer families. Joseph Durocher, who was born in Quebec City, first came to Ottawa, where he ran a grocery.

Around the late 1870s, Joseph opened a grocery and general store on Montreal Road in Janeville. The Durocher store remained in operation for many years before it was converted into a restaurant called the Vanier Grill.
