Notre-Dame Cemetery

455 Montreal Road

This Roman Catholic cemetery is located at 455 Montreal Road, near St. Laurent Boulevard. Opened in 1872, it contains nearly 120,000 graves. Almost 90% of them are graves of Canadians of French, Irish and Scottish ancestry. The others are mainly of Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Polish and Ukrainian Canadians.

Many famous Canadians are buried here, among them Sir Wilfrid Laurier (Prime Minister of Canada), Henri-Elzéar Taschereau (Chief Justice of Canada), Marius Barbeau (ethnologist), Maurice Pope (General, Land Forces), Lucien Lamoureux (Speaker of the House of Commons), Benjamin Chee Chee (painter) and Yousuf Karsh (internationally known photographer), all of whom lived in Ottawa.

Near the entrance of the cemetery, one of the most beautiful pedestal tombs in Ottawa pays tribute to the life of Sir Wilfrid Laurier. A Canadian government plaque commemorates his resting place.
