The history of Janeville will be presented at the Museopark this February 17th!

Robert Serré, an historian at heart, bitten by curiosity and an avid compiler of lost stories, will be talking about the origins of Vanier, in particular those of the anglo-protestant subdivision called Janeville.  If Mr. Serré dedicated his life’s work to a fascinating career in scientific translation, he finds himself today completely absorbed in the captivating world of genealogy and history, where he finds time to preside over the Gloucester Historical Society, publish books and give talks near and far.

This February 17th, make a date with history and come meet Donald McArthur and Robert Cummings, who met (137 years ago!) to realize a common dream and develop the land between Montreal Road, McArthur Avenue and the Bytown-Prescott Railway tracks (today the Vanier Parkway).  In the action-filled context of Confederation, McArthur and Cummings wanted to provide a peaceful haven for merchants and public servants who were crowding into Ottawa at this time.  Most importantly, it is in this same subdivision of Janeville that we find the rich pillars of a joint cooperation between English and French pioneer families.

Here lives a story to be remembered and cherished.

5$ (coffee, tea and cookies will be served). There will be a display table for those who wish to purchase Robert Serré’s books.

The Muséoparc Vanier Museopark presents the first of a series of talks!

“La passion des timbres postaux” will be given by M. Henri Masson from the Club philatélique de la capitale (Ottawa Stamp Collecting Club)

The Muséoparc Vanier Museopark is pleased to invite you to our first talk of the year that will discuss stamp collecting. M. Henri Masson,  amateur and stamp specialist, will guide us into the heart of this fascinating hobby that has for long occupied the collectors’ heart and mind.  By using projectors and magnifying equipment, M. Masson will help us deepen our understanding of these interesting  mail gypsies who keep the title of the most collected object in the world.  As email and other information technologies are threatening the future of traditional mail, M. Masson will explain to us how the stamp will become an important gateway to understanding economical, political, social and artistic trends in the world since the nineteenth century.  Stamps have since become precious artefacts, treasures to any amateur of stamp collecting.  Would it be time for you to dig up your old, dusty letters from your bedroom closet?
