Heritage Cemeteries in our Midst: Places of History and Memory to Discover

As part of the series of talks at the Muséoparc Vanier Museopark, Mr. Michel Prévost, chief archivist at the University of Ottawa and president of the Société d’histoire de l’Outaouais, will give a talk about Ottawa and Gatineau’s heritage cemeteries on Wednesday, October 19, at 7 pm.

Many heritage cemeteries are located in the national capital region. Unfortunately, our busy daily lives imply that we don’t often take into consideration their cultural value. In his talk, Mr. Prévost will place the emphasis on Ottawa’s Notre-Dame and Beechwood cemeteries as well as Gatineau’s Notre-Dame and St. James’ cemeteries. He will give us the opportunity to understand that cemeteries are like outdoor museums where history and memory meet each other on a daily basis. This public lecture will bring to our attention the graves of two former Canadian prime ministers, the first mayor of Ottawa, the founder of Hull and several other important personalities.

Michel Prévost has been interested in the Outaouais’ heritage and history for over thirty years. He regularly gives tours in Ottawa, Gatineau, the Outaouais and Eastern Ontario, pointing out cemeteries while fighting for their preservation.

Please confirm your presence at communication@museoparc.ca / 613-842-9871. Admission $ 5.00.

Please note that this activity will take place in French.
