Sports and Recreation

Vanier is characterized by the vitality and the extent of its associative network and by its sense of community. Several groups and associations have taken up residence and continue contributing, even today, to improve the cultural and social life of the citizens in Vanier.

Vanier has had four prosperous chapters of the St-Jean-Baptiste Society, one of the best known French language groups. True to their motto “Our institutions, our language and our rights”, the chapters of St-Charles (1909), Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes (1913), Notre-Dame du Saint-Esprit, and Marie-Médiatrice (1960) united an important part of Eastview’s Francophonie.

The Association canadienne-française de l’Ontario, an organization founded in Ottawa in 1910 and dedicated to the preservation of Franco-Ontarian rights, settled in Eastview on January 25, 1914.

The Fédération nationale des femmes canadiennes-françaises, also founded in Ottawa in 1914, had a circle in the Saint-Charles Parish.

Youths also enjoyed an active communal life in Vanier with three scout troops. Many young adults could also congregate in one of the five circles of the Association de la jeunesse franco-ontarienne. Today, many service clubs like the Richelieu, the Knights of Columbus, the Kiwanis and the Lions still exist in Vanier and serve the community

Vanier Citizens, like other Canadians, fully enjoy what our four seasons have to offer. Local sport organizations and infrastructures spawned in Vanier in the 1940s. The municipality constructed arenas, outdoor ice rinks and swimming-pools in order to welcome local teams. Over time, community activities like the Winter Carnival or the Miss Vanier pageant were also organized.

Nowadays, festivities like the Sugar Fest in the Richelieu Park continue to give citizens of Vanier the opportunity to gather and to celebrate their vibrant sense of community.
